Teen Kidnapping Case

April 6 2001: Dwain Fowler and Janet Hadwiger hear screaming and see 17 year old honor student Anne Sluti being shoved into a sports utility vehicle, and then the car speeds away. The two witnesses are unsure of what they have just seen. They are too far away to get a good look at the man. They at first think that it is just teenagers playing around. Anne Sluti disappears, and her car and her purse are found at the Hilltop Shopping Center in Nebraska. Anne's parents plead with the kidnapper to let her go. Police then link Anthony Zappa's crime wave across 5 states to the possible abduction of Anne Sluti. Meanwhile, Anne leaves as many clues as possible so that police can trace her steps in case she does not make it out alive. She even manages to call 911 briefly. The call is traced to a cabin in the hills near Yellowstone National Park in Montana. When the police arrive they do not find Anne Sluti or Tony Zappa aka Anthony Steven Wright. After several days the landlord of the lakeside cabin property calls the police when he sees a parked car in the driveway. After 6 days and a 10 hour standoff, Sluti convinces Tony Zappa to surrender to police. Zappa is taken into custody.

Where is Anne Sluti Now?

Friends and family say that today at 27 years old, the crime has not affected her at all in terms of trusting others and in her interpersonal relationships. Both Anne Sluti and her parents, Don and Elaine Sluti, have moved on from the incident and they try not to think about it. Neither sought counseling. She has graduated from college and works as an engineer in Indiana. Her scar has faded away. As for Tony Zappa, he was sentenced to life in prison back in 2002.

Tidbit
Anne Sluti found the movie about her story very hard to watch.
